Now organisers are asking them to take the final step by collecting and returning their fundraising money to help the charity hit its £809,000 target for Norwich.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series. Women of all ages and fitness levels came together to walk, jog or run 5k at the Norfolk Showground to raise money to help beat cancer.
Gemma Turpin, Race for Life event manager for Norwich, said: “We are really grateful to the women of Norwich who helped make Race for Life such a huge success. This year’s event was full of amazing moments for everyone and the atmosphere on the day was electric. It was incredibly emotional seeing all the ‘back-signs’ showing why women were taking part – in memory or celebration of a loved one or to mark their own cancer journey. And it was also remarkably uplifting, seeing so many mums, daughters, grandmothers, sisters and friends come together for one cause – to beat cancer.
“By taking part in Race for Life in Norwich women pledged their support to help fund research into a disease that one-in-three people in the UK will develop at some stage in their lives. Now we are asking them to keep that promise and help Cancer Research UK continue its life-saving work by returning their sponsorship money as soon as possible.”
When Race for Life started in 1994, many people diagnosed with cancer did not survive. But over the last 16 years, money generated by Race for Life has supported Cancer Research UK’s work and now the overall death rate for the disease has dropped by 15 per cent.
Gemma added: “One-in-three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives. But the good news is that more people are beating the disease than ever before. Cancer Research UK’s work is at the heart of that progress. By helping to raise money through Race for Life, our supporters are turning hope into reality.”
For information on returning sponsorship money, or to make a donation, visit www.raceforlife.org. Tax payers in the UK can ‘gift aid’ their donation, allowing Cancer Research UK to claim back up to 25p per pound from the Government.
